The total number of exchange-traded funds available on the London Stock Exchange has reached 100, more than double the tally at the beginning of this year, following the launch of eight new ETFs from Invesco PowerShares.

The first ETFs to be launched in Europe by PowerShares, which was acquired by Invesco in a deal completed in September last year, include funds covering fundamentals-based US and European equity indices as well clean energy, listed private equity and water ETFs.

‘We are delighted that Invesco PowerShares have chosen to launch their first ETFs in Europe on the London Stock Exchange,’ says David Shrimpton, head of product management and development at the London Stock Exchange.

‘Invesco PowerShares is joining the UK ETF market at a very exciting time. So far this year the number of ETFs available to investors on the exchange has grown from 46 to 100, order book trading volumes have nearly doubled, and the total value of ETF assets under management in the UK has expanded by 55 per cent compared with last year.’

Invesco PowerShares president Bruce Bond says: ‘The ETF market in Europe has grown by more than 60 per cent a year since 2004, but we see further tremendous opportunities as investors look for a more intelligent approach to ETFs.’

The eight ETFs launched on the London exchange are the PowerShares Dynamic US Fund, PowerShares FTSE RAFI US 1000 Fund, PowerShares Global Clean Energy Fund, PowerShares Palisades Global Water Fund, PowerShares Global Listed Private Equity Fund, PowerShares Dynamic Europe Fund, PowerShares FTSE RAFI Europe Fund and PowerShares Dynamic Global Developed Markets Fund.

The Global Clean Energy Fund is the first ETF to offer European investors access to the WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index, comprised of companies that focus on green, renewable energy and technologies facilitating cleaner energy.

The ETFs traded on the London Stock Exchange cover a range of UK and global equity and bond indices. As well as offering access to funds based on major country and regional indices and company fundamentals, the selection includes ETFs based on company size, dividend yield and sector. The exchange operates a multi-currency trading service that offers investors the choice of buying ETFs in either the local currency or the base currency of the index.

The PowerShares family of ETFs includes funds branded Intelligent Index, Intelligent Access and Intelligent Exposure. PowerShares Capital Management, which managed more than 90 US and international ETFs with assets of nearly USD35bn at the end of October. Invesco also offers investment products through the AIM, AIM Trimark, Atlantic Trust, Invesco, Invesco Perpetual and WL Ross & Co. brands.
