The New York Stock Exchange’s NYSE Arca electronic trading platform continued its development as a centre for listing and trading of exchange-traded funds and notes in 2007, during which it added 121 new ETFs and 17 ETNs, including 100 IPOs, to its roster of 261 ETFs and ETNs with primary listings.

Last month saw completion of the transfer of all ETFs and ETNs from the main exchange to NYSE Arca, which during the year established 10 new issuer relationships with ETF and ETN sponsors that had not previously listed a product on the market.

‘By setting the national best bid and offer nearly 85 per cent of the time and by leading US exchanges in ETF trading by handling 41 per cent of volume, NYSE Arca continues to be leader in the growing ETF sector,’ says Lisa Dallmer, a senior vice-president for ETFs and indices.

‘Through NYSE Arca’s advanced technology and proven market-maker structure, we look forward to continuing to offer investors, product sponsors and market professionals the most compelling value proposition in 2008 and beyond.’

Last year iShares, the US and global ETF market leader, chose the NYSE as the primary listing exchange for the expansion of its innovative suite of fixed-income ETFs, the iShares Lehman bond funds.

Following by the HealthShares family of vertically-defined healthcare ETFs, NYSE Arca added the CurrencyShares, Japanese Yen Trust, which joined seven existing Arca-listed currency-focused products from Rydex Investments. Van Eck Global’s environmentally-focused Market Vectors – Global Alternative Energy ETF listing was another innovative product listed on the exchange.

Tracking the performance of approximately 100 US-listed securities, PowerShares introduced the first ETF based on technical analysis in the Dorsey Wright Technical Leaders Index, the PowerShares DWA Technical Leaders Portfolio.

In the last quarter of the year, WisdomTree listed its 33rd product on NYSE Arca, the WisdomTree Emerging Markets SmallCap Dividend Fund, while Vanguard listed its first funds on NYSE Arca with the launch of three new Mega Cap 300 ETFs. The NYSE Arca Tech 100 ETF, a benchmark for the technology sector, became the first ETF to stage an IPO on NYSE Arca when it listed on last March.
