Barclays Global Investors’ exchange-trade fund subsidiary iShares, the world’s largest provider of ETFs, has announced that the iShares € Corporate Bond fund has exceeded EUR1bn in assets under management, becoming the first bond ETF within the iShares range to reach this milestone.

Overall, the iShares € Corporate Bond fund, which tracks the Markit iBoxx Euro Liquid Corporates Index, investing in euro-denominated investment grade bonds across a range of sectors, is the fifth iShares fund to pass the EUR1bn mark.

The four iShares equity ETF with more than EUR1bn are the iShares DJ Euro Stoxx 50, with assets of EUR3.806bn as of June 6, iShares S&P 500 (EUR2.738bn), iShares FTSE 100 (EUR2.101bn) and iShares MSCI Japan (EUR1.299bn).

‘Investors have clearly recognised that the iShares € Corporate Bond fund is a simple and cost-effective way to gain exposure to the European corporate bond market,’ says iShares senior fixed-income portfolio manager Alex Claringbull. ‘Uniquely among corporate bond ETF products, this fund tracks a recognised index of physical bonds, which clearly resonates well with clients.

‘ETFs are predominantly used currently to invest in equity markets, which makes this milestone particularly pleasing as it demonstrates that investors are starting to recognise the benefits ETFs can offer in other asset classes such as bonds.

‘It also reinforces iShares’ view that assets in fixed-income ETFs will grow by up to 200 per cent over the next three years, as capital market banks start to trade the products more widely and they become increasingly accepted by mainstream investors.’

Barclays Global Investors is one of the world’s largest asset managers with more than USD2trn in assets under management at the end of last year. Having created the first index strategy in 1971 and the first quantitative active strategy in 1979, BGI is the global ETF leader with more than 320 iShares funds for institutions and individuals worldwide.
