The National Investor Relations Institute has elected Brad Wilks as the 2010 chairman of the Niri board of directors.

Wilks (pictured) is managing director of Sard Verbinnen, a provider of corporate, financial and crisis communications counsel and services.

He succeeds Bina Thompson, vice president of investor relations at Colgate-Palmolive.

“I am very pleased that the Niri board has elected Brad Wilks to this key position,” says Jeff Morgan, president and chief executive officer of Niri. “Under outgoing Chair Bina Thompson’s successful leadership, Niri made great strides in refocusing on its core mission areas. Brad is ideally suited to lead the board during this period of profound change, as we sustain our momentum and continue to increase the value Niri delivers to our membership.”

Wilks says: “I am delighted and honoured to be elected chair at this pivotal time for Niri and the investor relations profession. The business, governance and regulatory challenges faced by issuers in the current environment represent an opportunity for Niri to step up and deliver services to further enhance the relevancy and status of investor relations. I look forward to working with the board, staff and all our members to strengthen the bond between local chapters and Niri staff and programmes, and in supporting Niri’s increased role in advocacy.”

Wilks’ primary career emphasis has been in serving as communications and investor relations counsel to senior executives at publicly traded corporations. His experience includes mergers and acquisitions, proxy contests, litigation and crisis communications, product recalls and senior executive changes.

Prior to joining Sard Verbinnen, Wilks was managing director and head of the Chicago office of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide. Prior to Ogilvy, Wilks was senior vice president and partner of Fleishman-Hillard, where he headed the firm’s financial communications and technology practices in Chicago.

Niri is the professional association of corporate officers and investor relations consultants responsible for communication among corporate management, shareholders, securities analysts and other financial community constituents.
