Northern Trust, a provider of financial services for institutions and affluent individuals, has named Richard K. Barnett chief investment officer of the company’s personal financial services in the US western region.

In this role, Barnett is responsible for managing investment policy, asset allocation, portfolio construction and client service for USD12bn in client portfolios for the western region of Northern Trust.

He is a member of Northern Trust’s global investment policy committee, and reports to Steven R. Bell, chairman and chief executive officer of the western region.

"Richard’s strong investment background and experience managing portfolios for wealthy families, foundations, endowments and pension plans will serve us well in our mission to offer leading-edge investment solutions to Northern Trust clients," Bell says.

Over more than two decades, Barnett’s money management career has spanned both quantitative and fundamental investing. He joined Northern Trust in 2002 and served as senior portfolio manager for the foundation and institutional advisory services group. In 2007, he took on additional responsibilities as senior investment officer for the Los Angeles region.

Prior to joining Northern Trust, Barnett was vice president and director of equities at City National Investment Advisors, and before that held senior positions with SSI Investment Management and Leland O’Brien Rubinstein Associates.

Barnett is past president of the CFA Society of Los Angeles, and former chair of the Technology Advisory Committee of the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute.
