US-based Citigroup has appointed Richard Cookson as chief investment officer for Citi Private Bank.

Cookson will be responsible for shaping investment strategy and thought leadership across the private bank’s global platform and will chair its global investment steering committee.

He will report to Jane Fraser, Citi Private Bank’s chief executive.

Cookson joins Citi from HSBC where he was managing director and global head of asset allocation research, responsible for global macro investment strategy and asset allocation recommendations for developing and emerging equities, government bonds, investment grade and high-yield credit and commodities.

Prior to HSBC, he spent several years at The Economist magazine where he served in a variety of roles, most recently as a columnist and international finance editor.

Citi has also appointed Alex Godwin as global head of asset allocation. He will report to Cookson and be responsible for guiding and setting all aspects of asset allocation as well as translating Citi Private Bank’s investment themes into offerings and solutions for clients. He will also join the global investment steering committee.

Godwin joins from Lombard Odier where he was the global head of portfolio investment. Prior to that, he was the head of portfolio analysis and solutions for Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management.

Deepak Sharma, chairman of Citi Private Bank, says: "Richard and Alex are terrific additions to our investment platform. They will work closely with our colleagues in Citi’s investment research and analysis to deliver the thought leadership, quality product offerings and investment solutions that our clients seek from Citi."
