Bonhams Scottish Colourist sale makes GBP3m in Edinburgh

A sale of major Colourist paintings and works by other Scottish artists at Bonhams in Edinburgh made a total of GBP3m.

Among the stand-out purchases at the sale were: ‘Flowers and Fruit’ by Samuel Peploe which sold for GBP512,800; and ‘The Artist’s Drawing Room’ by Francis Cadell which made GBP400,800 making it the second highest Cadell to be sold at auction. John Fergusson’s `At the Milliner’s Paris’ was also sold for GBP222,000. In all seven paintings made over GBP100,000.

Bonhams Managing Director in Scotland, Miranda Grant, says: “This is an amazing result. Bonhams is the only international auction house to hold sales of Scottish art in Scotland. We believe that our distinct Scottish identity supported by our international reach is good for sellers and buyers alike and this evening’s sale has justified our confidence.”

Bonhams Head of Pictures in Scotland, Chris Brickley, says: “We had an exceptional selection of pictures for this sale and I am not surprised that bidding was so competitive. This was an excellent opportunity to acquire works of the highest quality by some of the biggest names in Scottish art.”
