TCW caps strong year for inflows with launch of global bond fund

The TCW Group (TCW) has launched the TCW Global Bond Fund, the newest addition to a TCW-MetWest fund complex that has attracted USD7 billion in net inflows year-to-date.

The combined inflows make TCW the 12th fastest growing fund company in 2011, according to a recent report from Strategic Insight. The firm’s mutual fund assets have grown almost 30% this year and have more than tripled, to USD33 billion, in less than two years.

"Investors have sought out bond funds in 2011 and our expertise across US and emerging markets fixed income asset classes has been recognised and reflected in our strong inflows," says Charles "Chuck" Baldiswieler (pictured), President and Chief Executive Officer of TCW Funds, Inc. "The new TCW Global Bond Fund offers investors the broadest possible option to tap our fixed income expertise."

The MetWest Total Return Bond Fund has led the strong inflows, attracting over USD4.8 billion in new assets year-to-date, while the TCW Emerging Markets Income Fund has attracted over USD1.35 billion in new assets. Both are rated five stars by Morningstar for long-term performance.

Portfolio managers from both funds will lead the TCW Global Bond Fund, the first TCW mutual fund to invest in both US and international fixed income securities in the same portfolio. Tad Rivelle, TCW’s chief investment officer for fixed income, and Stephen Kane will co-manage the Fund with David Robbins, portfolio manager of the TCW Emerging Markets Income Fund.

The TCW Global Bond Fund will invest in fixed income securities across all the major currencies and regions of the world as represented by the Barclays Capital Global Aggregate Index. The Fund is expected to take a broadly diversified approach that combines both top down and bottom up strategies. The Fund will take advantage of TCW’s experience in the corporate and structured sectors of the US market and in the emerging markets while also providing exposure to bonds in the major developed markets outside the US.

"We see the Global Bond Fund leveraging the core strength of TCW fixed income, which is our fundamental research capability," says Kane. "Some global bond funds are macro-oriented but this Fund will be more micro, bottom-up oriented and find opportunity through credit research."
