Thomas Miller appoints head of private investment

Thomas Miller Investment (TMI), a member of the 127 year old Thomas Miller Group of Companies, is appointing Tom Richards as head of private investment management (offshore).

Richards joins TMI from Maitland where he was senior investment manager within the investment services business on the Isle of Man.

He started his investment career as a portfolio manager with the independent offshore firm Ramsey Crookall, before working as an investment manager with Quilter, part of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Wealth Management. Prior to this he spent five years as a commissioned officer and pilot with the Royal Air Force.

Based on the Isle of Man, Richards will lead a team of investment managers and assistants to continue the development of the offshore private client investment business and will report to Mike Balfour, chief executive of Thomas Miller Investment.

In addition to Richards’ appointment, Andrew Buchanan, who joined the offshore investment team in January, has been appointed to the new position of senior associate private investment management (Channel Islands), a key growth area for TMI.

Balfour says: “Thomas Miller Investment has a growing presence in London, Edinburgh and the Isle of Man and is committed to building its profile in the Channel Islands. Tom’s appointment will add to our existing experience and expertise and Andrew’s new role will serve to strengthen our platform for growth into new territories.”

Richards says: “Thomas Miller Investment has a great team with outstanding strength and depth of investment management experience. Together with our London and Edinburgh offices, it is a valuable asset for Thomas Miller Investment to be able to fully cater for UK on and offshore client requirements. I look forward to leading the offshore private investment team on the Isle of Man, as we look to promote the business and provide greater value for our international client base.”

Thomas Miller Investment has funds under management in excess of GBP2.8bn and manages tailored investment portfolios for insurance mutuals, charities, pension schemes, governments and private clients.
