Global ETF assets total USD1,653bn at end of third quarter

At the end of quarter three 2012, the global exchange-traded fund industry had 3,312 ETFs, with 7,526 listings, assets of USD1,653bn, from 176 providers on 52 exchanges, according to ETFGI.



ETF assets have increased by 5.0 per cent from USD1,573bn in August 2012 to USD1,653bn in September 2012.

Year-to-date through end of Q3 2012, ETF assets have increased by 22.2 per cent from USD1,353bn to USD1,653bn.

In September 2012, ETFs saw net inflows of USD40bn. YTD through end of Q3 2012, ETFs saw net inflows of USD171bn.

SPDR ETFs gathered the largest net ETF inflows in September with USD14,381m, followed by iShares with USD13,960m and Vanguard with USD5,059m net inflows.

iShares gathered the largest net ETF inflows YTD with USD48,263m, followed by Vanguard with USD42,854m and SPDR ETFs with USD25,216m net inflows.

Polaris experienced the largest net ETF outflows in September with USD270m, followed by Samsung Asset Management with USD244m and China Asset Management with USD185m net outflows.

Commerzbank experienced the largest net ETF outflows YTD with USD1,114m, followed by EasyETF with USD735m and Direxion Shares with USD733m net outflows.

Including other exchange-traded products, at the end of Q3 2012, the global ETF/ETP industry had 4,690 ETFs/ETPs, with 9,626 listings, assets of USD1,857bn, from 204 providers on 56 exchanges.

ETF/ETP assets have increased by 5.4 per cent from USD1,762bn in August 2012 to USD1,857bn in September 2012.

YTD through end of Q3 2012, ETF/ETP assets have increased by 21.7 per cent from USD1,526bn to USD1,857bn.

In September 2012, ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of USD45bn. YTD through end of Q3 2012, ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of USD188bn.

SPDR ETFs gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in September with USD16,186m, followed by iShares with USD14,971m and Vanguard with USD5,059m net inflows.

Summary for United States ETFs and ETPs

At the end of Q3 2012, the US ETF industry had 1,174 ETFs, assets of USD1,158bn, from 33 providers on 3 exchanges. Including other ETPs, at the end of September 2012, the US ETF/ETP industry had 1,456 ETFs/ETPs, assets of USD1,301bn, from 51 providers on three exchanges.

At the end of Q3 2012, the European ETF industry had 1,318 ETFs, with 4,822 listings, assets of USD309bn, from 40 providers on 22 exchanges. Including other ETPs, at the end of Q3 2012, the European ETF/ETP industry had 1,920 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,057 listings, assets of USD349bn, from 46 providers on 23 exchanges.

At the end of Q3 2012, the Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) ETF industry had 392 ETFs, with 507 listings, assets of USD72bn, from 89 providers on 14 exchanges. Including other ETPs, at the end of Q3 2012, the Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) ETF/ETP industry had 411 ETFs/ETPs, with 529 listings, assets of USD73bn, from 91 providers on 14 exchanges.

At the end of Q3 2012, the Japanese ETF industry had 97 ETFs, with 101 listings, assets of USD45bn, from 11 providers on three exchanges. Including other ETPs, at the end of Q3 2012, the Japanese ETF/ETP industry had 106 ETFs/ETPs, with 140 listings, assets of USD46bn, from 15 providers on three exchanges.

At the end of Q3 2012, the Canadian ETF industry had 255 ETFs, with 338 listings, assets of USD55bn, from seven providers on one exchange. Including other ETPs, at the end of Q3 2012, the Canadian ETF/ETP industry had 258 ETFs/ETPs, with 365 listings, assets of USD55bn, from nine providers on one exchange.

At the end of Q3 2012, the Latin American ETF industry had 35 ETFs, with 542 listings, assets of USD10,819m, from 16 providers on five exchanges. Including other ETPs, at the end of Q3 2012, the Latin American ETF/ETP industry had 35 ETFs/ETPs, with 571 listings, assets of USD10,819m, from 19 providers on five exchanges.
