Franklin Templeton hires Toby Hayes to spearhead UK-multi-asset capability

Franklin Templeton has hired Toby Hayes as vice president and portfolio manager for its Franklin Templeton Multi-Asset Strategies (FTMAS) group.

Based in London, Hayes will be responsible for developing and managing UK dedicated multi-asset strategies, and communicating the investment team’s investment philosophy, process and strategy to UK investors.
Hayes will join Franklin Templeton on 2 September 2013 and will report to Brent Smith, managing director of funds research and management, Franklin Templeton Multi-Asset Strategies.
In his previous role, Hayes was multi-asset portfolio manager for Pacific Real Estate Capital Partners where he was responsible for developing alternative strategies across real asset classes.
He also developed and co-managed Pacific’s Liquid Property Fund, the first UCITS IV multi-asset property fund of its kind, which delivered core property returns with low risk and high liquidity using direct property swaps, CMBS debt and REITS equity.
Prior to that, Hayes was founding partner at multi-asset boutique Armstrong, where he managed a range of multi-asset portfolios targeting returns over inflation. Designed as volatility targeted solutions for IFAs in post-RDR landscape, the fund range achieved true multi-asset coverage through exposures across a broad remit of traditional and alternative investments.
At Insight Investment, Hayes was a portfolio manager for Insight’s Diversified Target Return Fund, a multi-strategy thematic fund with an absolute return mandate that pioneered UCITS multi-asset investing.
Prior to Insight, he held multi-asset portfolio manager roles at UBS Wealth Management, Banco Commercial Portugues (BCP) Private Bank and Abbey National Wealth Management.
Ian Wilkins, Franklin Templeton’s UK country head, says: “Toby is a talented multi-asset portfolio manager with a strong performance track record, and experience across both traditional and alternative asset classes. Toby brings further investment expertise to Franklin Templeton’s global multi asset strategies team, who currently manage GBP19bn (c.USD29bn as of June 2013).
“This appointment is another key milestone in our objective to build our UK business across advisory, discretionary, and institutional channels. Toby is a proven multi-asset portfolio manager who will allow us to introduce our multi asset capabilities to UK retail and institutional investors who seek investment options with a targeted outcome within a risk-controlled framework.”
Rick Frisbie, head of Franklin Templeton’s Multi-Asset Strategies, says: “We are delighted to welcome Toby Hayes, an experienced portfolio manager with over 14 years track record in the industry.  Multi-asset solutions are an important initiative for Franklin Templeton Investments.  Toby’s hire underscores our commitment to further develop these capabilities and offerings in key markets in response to clients’ needs and appetite for this rapidly-growing sector.”
