Global ETFs and ETPs suffered record net outflows in August, says ETFGI

Global ETFs and ETPs suffered record net outflows of USD16.77bn in August after gathering near record net inflows of USD45.26bn in July, according to ETFGI.

ETF and ETP assets have declined from the July record high of USD2.17trn to USD2.11trn at the end of August 2013. There are now 4,938 ETFs/ETPs, with 9,932 listings, from 211 providers listed on 57 exchanges.
 
“Investors’ concern and uncertainty over the impact on markets of a potential military conflict in Syria and when and how the Fed will begin QE tapering caused investors to net withdraw USD16.77bn from ETFs/ETPs in August,” says Deborah Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI.
 
In August, equity ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with USD13.62bn. North American/US equity ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows USD16.60bn, followed by emerging market ETFs/ETPs with USD5.12bn, while European equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with USD5.09bn.
 
In August, fixed income ETFs/ETPs saw net outflows of USD5.23bn. Government bond ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with USD3.65bn, followed by inflation with USD772m, and high yield with USD618m, while government/corporate bond ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with USD208m.
 
Commodity ETFs/ETPs saw net outflows of USD911m. Precious metals ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with USD1.08bn.
 
Year to date (YTD) through end of August 2013, global ETFs/ETPs have gathered net inflows of USD133.44bn which is below the USD141.71bn gathered at this time last year.
 
Vanguard ranks first based on August net inflows with USD3.54bn, and first in YTD net inflows with USD39.71bn. ProShares ranks second based on August net inflows with USD1.61bn and sixth in YTD net inflows with USD5.17bn. Nomura, the seventh ranked provider by overall assets, ranks third for net inflows in August with USD1.23bn and ranks 12th with YTD inflows of USD3.09bn. Meanwhile iShares, which ranks first based on overall assets, suffered net outflows of USD5.2 bn in August and ranks second in YTD inflows with USD27.24bn. SPDR ETFs, which ranks second in overall assets, suffered USD19.24bn of net outflows in August and USD7.44bn of net outflows YTD.
