Guernsey delegation embarks on two-week tour of Asia

Representatives from Guernsey are heading to Hong Kong and mainland China during the next fortnight to reinforce the island’s financial services offering to current and prospective Asian contacts.

Fiona Le Poidevin (pictured), chief executive of Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the island’s finance industry – is next week leading a delegation of the island’s wealth management professionals who are exhibiting at the STEP Asia event in Hong Kong.
She will be joined the following week by Kevin Stewart, Guernsey’s Minister for Commerce and Employment, and several financial services practitioners to promote the Island’s offering in mainland China. During the week, Guernsey Finance is hosting a private wealth event in Shanghai and an investment funds seminar in Beijing.
Le Poidevin says: “This year we are once again exhibiting as one of the lead sponsors at the STEP Asia conference in Hong Kong. It is now a staple of our annual activity because it is a highly regarded event and is always very well supported by Guernsey wealth management practitioners. It also provides an opportunity to have meetings while in Hong Kong and visit other parts of the region such as mainland China.
“I am delighted that this year we are not only holding meetings in Shanghai and Beijing but we are also hosting our own events. We opened our representative office in Shanghai in 2007 and at that time there was very little understanding about Guernsey in mainland China. Since then we have made great progress in raising our profile and it is a measure of this success that we are able to stage our own private wealth event in Shanghai and an investment funds seminar in Beijing.”
Le Poidevin is in Hong Kong from Monday 6 October to Friday 10 October for the STEP Asia event. She will be joined by Guernsey Finance’s China representative, Wendy Weng, as well as representatives from Barclays, Butterfield, Cazenove, Fides and Ogier.
Le Poidevin and Weng will be joined in mainland China by the Commerce and Employment Minister and Mark Oliphant, media manager at Guernsey Finance.
The Guernsey private wealth event takes place on 14 October in Shanghai where panellists will include Alan Chick, the chairman of Richmond Fiduciary Group, and Mark Huntley, a board director of the Heritage Group.
