The Edinburgh Investment Trust plc celebrates 125 years

The Edinburgh Investment Trust is this year celebrating 125 years of investing.

The investment vehicle dates as far back as 1889, in a decade that saw the Forth Bridge completed, Vincent van Gogh paint The Starry Night and Queen Victoria celebrate her Golden Jubilee.
In late Victorian Britain, investment trusts were a new form of collective investment aimed at offering broader investor access. They were launched to take advantage of the rapid industrialisation in Britain and the global trading opportunities offered abroad by the expanding British Empire. As a result, many investment trusts invested in the 'emerging markets' of the time, such as North America, South America and the Indian Sub-Continent, with a focus on railways, commodities and other sectors that offered a potential return on investment.
The Edinburgh Investment Trust plc is one of the larger investment trusts in the Association of Investment Companies (AIC) UK Income Growth sector. With shareholders' funds at GBP1.45bn, it is now one of the largest investment trusts investing in UK equities. Day to day, the portfolio is managed by Mark Barnett, head of UK equities, Invesco Perpetual.
