Jupiter reshapes environmental and sustainability strategy team

Jupiter is changing the organisational structure of its environmental and sustainable strategy team to provide an enhanced central source of information and expertise for the benefit of the wider fund management team.

With issues surrounding sustainability and corporate governance now a key consideration for retail, professional and institutional investors, the changes are designed with the ultimate aim of improving investor outcomes through the provision of expert knowledge and research capabilities.
Charlie Thomas, head, environment and sustainability investment strategy and fund manager of the Jupiter Ecology Fund since 2003, says: “We have come a long way from those early days in the 1980s when environmental and sustainability concerns were niche issues for investors. Today, they are very much part of mainstream investing. Given our strong track record in this field, we are adopting a new team structure to make it easier to share our knowledge and insight on a company-wide level for the benefit of all of our clients.”
The reorganisation will see more focused roles and new job titles for sustainability analysts Mark Evans and Jon Wallace, who report into Thomas.
Evans will become sustainability investment analyst, focusing on sustainability issues and opportunities across Jupiter’s broader investment range. He will conduct company research, identify short and long-term trends related to environment and social issues and examine how sustainable investment can potentially improve the investment outcome for clients. He will also ensure Jupiter’s participation in global initiatives such as the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment
Wallace will now take on the role of environmental and responsible investment analyst. He will work closely with fund managers Thomas, Chris Watt and Abbie Llewellyn-Waters on Jupiter’s Environmental and Responsible Funds. He will provide investment analysis which will range from in-depth company research to providing analysis on sectors, countries and themes as they relate to the investment strategies
Ashish Ray has been appointed as governance research manager. He and his team will work in partnership with the fund managers and assist them in researching, co-ordinating and conducting dialogue with companies regarding corporate governance matters.
Jupiter vice chairman Edward Bonham Carter has been appointed to the board of The Investor Forum. The forum, which launched on 2 July 2014 following the recommendations from the Kay Review of UK equity markets and long-term decision making (July 2012), has been set up by the investment management industry to help improve long-term returns to investors. Simon Fraser, an experienced investor and former chief investment officer at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, has been appointed chairman.
Emma Howard Boyd will be engaged by Jupiter as an external consultant, offering her wealth of experience and expertise to the Stewardship Committee and the Sustainability Review Committee. She will also provide advisory services on stewardship matters to the Executive Committee. For many years, Howard Boyd held the role of sustainable investment and governance director and then director, stewardship at Jupiter. She was integral to the development of Jupiter’s reputation in the fields of corporate governance and sustainability.
