SLI offers Australian investors access to absolute return global bond strategy

Standard Life Investments’ (SLI) Absolute Return Global Bond Strategies Trust (ARGBS) is now available to Australian investors, and has been awarded a ‘Recommended’ rating from Lonsec.

In its favourable review, Lonsec noted Standard Life Investment’s well-resourced and experienced team and its strong risk management capabilities that are embedded into the fund’s investment process.

“This is the first external rating for the Absolute Return Global Bond Strategy in Australia, and we are delighted to be recommended by Lonsec,” says Matthew Newham, Standard Life Investments, Investment Director – Wholesale. “There is considerable demand in Australia for absolute return bond funds with established track records, which is exactly what ARGBS offers. The underlying fund has been in operation since March 2011 yielding favourable returns for investors.”.

According to Newham, absolute return bonds investors are looking for returns similar to typical long-term bond markets, but with reduced risk. They also want performance across all market conditions and, by using directional and relative value strategies, ARGBS targets positive returns whether markets are rising or falling.

“The Absolute Return Bonds portfolio targets cash +3% each year (gross of fees) over rolling three-year periods, with expected volatility of less than 5%. This is in line with historical bond-market levels of return,” he says. “To achieve this objective, we seek genuine diversification, investing across a wide range of fixed income investment opportunities in both traditional and advanced asset strategies. These include credit, government bonds and currencies. To maximise return potential, we combine a broad range of macro and tactical positions to create a portfolio of strategies that complement each other, chosen specifically with the goal of working well together in a wide array of economic outcomes.”
