Independent investment advisory firm IAM Advisory has strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of David Smith (pictured) as Chief Investment Officer and Chairman of the Investment Committee.

Based in Guernsey, Smith will lead the investment team which provides strategic direction and practical advice on structuring, monitoring and controlling all material aspects in the management of the investment portfolios of the company’s clientele of sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, trustees, family offices and high net worth individuals. He will also be closely involved with client management and business development across the company’s offices in London, Guernsey and Jersey.

Smith, who was Chief Investment Officer at IAM Advisory from 2002 to 2008, brings 27 years of experience in investment management to the role. Having previously held senior positions in both the UK and the Channel Islands he is very experienced in working with a range of client profiles including high net worth investors and a broad range of wealth structures.

Smith is a graduate of Durham, Bradford and the Open Universities, a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and a Chartered Wealth Manager. He is a former Member of the London Stock Exchange.

‘David Smith’s appointment supports IAM Advisory’s growth across our three offices and reflects the global demand for completely independent investment advice,’ says Michael Strachan, Managing Director of IAM Advisory. ‘We are delighted to welcome back such a high calibre professional; David understands the way we work and our unique approach. The appointment sustains IAM Advisory’s position as the pre-eminent provider of independent and unconflicted investment advice.’

IAM Advisory was founded in 1987 by Michael Strachan and was based on his significant experience in establishing several major sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East. Strachan’s unique fiduciary experience, built up since 1975, helped him to develop the service offered by the company, which is suitable for anyone with direct or fiduciary responsibility for substantial investment portfolios.

Collectively the senior investment team has over 100 years of ‘hands-on’ investment experience and is supported by a full research capability, covering managers, funds and investment strategy.

IAM Advisory’s risk control is multi-dimensional, through unique proprietary software, setting dynamic structures that encourage and demand active and effective management from discretionary managers.
