Pension funds turn to alternatives

A new study from State Street, Pensions with Purpose – Meeting the Retirement Challenge, has found that pension funds are turning to alternative investments such as hedge funds, private equity and infrastructure as they try to find new sources of returns.

The study found 52 per cent of pension funds want to invest more in property over the next three years, while 48 per cent want to use funds of hedge funds.
Some 48 per cent of UK pension funds are upping their investment in private equity investment, while 43.5 per cent are planning direct loans to borrowers and 39.1 per cent want to fund infrastructure projects.
The survey urges pension funds to re-think their strategies in the face of historically low interest rates, demographic shifts, persistent market volatility and funding pressures.
