English rugby club Harlequin FC has launched it first retail bond offering investors interest at a rate of 5.5 per cent (gross) per annum, paid in cash semi-annually in arrears, over an initial five-year fixed-term.

The Harlequin FC Bond is aiming to raise GBP7.5 million (up to GBP15 million may be issued to satisfy demand) which will be invested in furthering the club’s long-term ambitions of building new audiences at home and abroad, expanding the horizons of the professional game, growing the business, and remaining at the top tier of professional rugby to further the Harlequins name.
Harlequins, which this summer will celebrate its 150th anniversary, has focused on investing both on and off the field; driving performance both commercially and of the playing squad, widening the appeal of Harlequins and growing Club memberships. This focus has resulted in record turnover of GBP17.9m for the year ended 30 June 2015, up 18 per cent on 2013/14 and highest ever levels of membership, totalling 9,170 for the 2015/16 season, an increase of 13 per cent on the 2013/14 season membership of 8,079.
David Ellis (pictured), Chief Executive of Harlequin FC, says: “I am delighted to announce the launch of the Harlequin FC Bond and to offer our supporters the opportunity to be part of the next chapter of Harlequins’ story. The proceeds will enable us to invest in the Club, take us to new levels and to continue to stay ahead of the game as it grows. Our goal is to be the best rugby club in Europe and the best sports club in the world. The focus for the Club is to continue to invest in the areas that positively impact the business including our players, supporters and partners with the aim of underpinning our sporting achievements with commercial success to lay the foundation for the next 150 years.”
All Applicants for Harlequin FC Bonds (whether successful or not) together with up to two nominees will be eligible to join The Quarters Club which gives access to exclusive offers and invitation opportunities to take part in events with the club’s playing department as well as exclusive chances to acquire memorabilia, and entry to 150th anniversary events
Investments can be made in multiples of GBP1,000, subject to a minimum investment of GBP2,000 per Applicant
