June sees record levels of net new assets in ETFs

ETF data gatherer ETFGI reports that assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed globally reached a new record high of USD3.177 trillion at the end of June 2016. 

USD31.38 billion of net new assets were gathered during the month of June marking the 29th consecutive month on net inflows, according to preliminary data. Record levels of assets were also reached at the end of June for ETFs/ETPs listed in the United States at USD2.256 trillion, in Japan which reached USD147.67 billion and in Canada which reached USD79.14 billion.
 
The Global ETF/ETP industry had 6,424 ETFs/ETPs, with 12,268 listings, assets of USD3.177 trillion, from 284 providers listed on 65 exchanges in 53 countries.
 
“Markets and investors around the world were engulfed in the chaos following what many saw as the unexpected result of the UK’s June 23rd vote.  Volatility was up significantly during the month. The S+P 500 index was up just 0.3 per cent.  Emerging markets were up 3.94 per cent while developed markets ex-US declined 2.87 per cent.  There is still uncertainty in the markets due to questions on when and how Brexit changes will be implement and the many changes happening in UK political parties" says Deborah Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI.
 
 In June 2016, ETFs/ETPs listed globally saw net inflows of USD31.38 billion.  Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with USD11.72 billion, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with USD10.80 billion, and commodity ETFs/ETPs with USD6.63 billion. ETF/ETP average daily trading volumes increased by 20.9 per cent from USD81.31 billion in May 2016 to USD98.33 billion in June 2016.
 
ETFGI reports that YTD through end of June 2016, ETFs/ETPs have seen net inflows of USD122.71 billion which is significantly below the USD152.66 billion gathered at this point last year.   YTD Fixed income ETFs/ETPs have gathered a record level of USD67.63 billion, followed by commodity ETFs/ETPs which have gathered a record level of USD26.53 billion, and equity ETFs/ETPs which have gathered USD15.15 billion. 
 
 iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in June with USD13.43 billion, followed by Vanguard with USD10.02 billion followed by Nomura AM with USD2.10 billion net inflows.
 
 YTD, Vanguard gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows YTD with USD42.28 billion, followed by iShares with USD40.51 billion and Nomura AM with USD7.39 billion net inflows.
