SIX Swiss Exchange records ETF turnover of CHF22.3bn in Q2

SIX Swiss Exchange recorded an exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading turnover of CHF22.3 billion in the second quarter of 2016, which equates to an increase of CHF1.3 billion relative to the same quarter the previous year.

According to the latest edition of the exchange’s ETF Quarterly Statistics, there were 236,896 ETF transactions carried out during the period. The average transaction size was CHF96,403, corresponding to a slight decline quarter-on-quarter. The number of transactions below CHF10,000 in the second quarter stood at 97,375.
In Q2, the iShares SMI was once again the most-traded ETF with a turnover of CHF1,175.2 million. The iShares S&P 500 UCITS captured second place with trading turnover of CHF826.4 million. Third place went to the UBS ETF – MSCI EM SF USD A with a trading turnover of CHF698.3 million.
During the last quarter, both the ZKB GOLD ETF (USD) and the ZKB GOLD ETF managed to keep their spot among the top 20 of the most traded products, ranking ninth and 16th with a turnover of CHF349.2 million and CHF233.1 million, respectively. The USD version saw its turnover rise by CHF33.1 million compared to the previous quarter and moved up from 18th to ninth place.
With a turnover of CHF259.9 million, the UBS ETF Gold hedged (CHF) A in 14th place is the third commodity ETF among the top 20.
In the second quarter the economic situation in Switzerland continued to be marked by difficult conditions. The "Brexit" decision has created insecurity in the markets. As a result, investment strategies of broad diversification via ETFs in various regions and markets or in gold continued to enjoy popularity among investors.
At the end of May, SIX Swiss Exchange welcomed UniCredit as a new ETF issuer who will assume the market making for its two products on convertible bonds from European issuers. The underlying index contains only bonds with a high convexity.
In total, 48 new ETFs were listed on SIX Swiss Exchange during the second quarter of 2016. As of 30 June, the segment encompassed 1,236 products, including 14 actively managed ETFs (a total of 333 are offered in an additional trading currency). The products are listed on the stock exchange by 22 providers, with liquidity provided by 24 official market makers.
