Harrods Estates is marketing a 1,301sq ft three-bedroom lateral apartment situated in Whaddon House, in the heart of Knightsbridge, a building which at one time was home to two of The Beatles.
The GBP3,495,000 apartment is located on a private road, William Mews, tucked away from the bustle of the Brompton Road with its high-end shops and restaurants.
Whaddon House has been home to both George Harrison and Ringo Starr of the Beatles, who lived in Flats 5, and 6 from 1964-1965. During this period, Beatlemania had swept the nation, with the band just having had a number one hit with She Loves You. With a world tour and aspirations of cracking America, it was at Whaddon House that the foursome met to have afternoon tea prior to travelling to Buckingham Palace to receive their MBE from her majesty the Queen on 26 October 1965.
Their manager Brian Epstein, who is affectionately known as the fifth Beatle, lived above the band members on the top floor from late 1963 to 1965, and recommended the building as a suitable residence for George and Ringo due to its prime location. During his time in Whaddon House, Brian hosted a number of glamorous “at home” parties, including a showbiz gathering in August 1964, which all four Beatles, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Judy Garland among others attended. The celebrations moved to the roof of the building where a makeshift ballroom – complete with red carpet – was set up in a marquee.
Shaun Drummond, Sales Director of Harrods Estates, says: “Upon entering the quiet and inviting William Mews, you can easily forget how close you are to the main streets of Knightsbridge, where the likes of Harrods and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel can be found. Whaddon House is a historical building, renowned as one of the key Beatles properties, and offers a luxurious family home with an ideal location. I suspect that Brian Epstein didn’t have to do much convincing when he recommended the building to Ringo and George, as their London residence.”
The property has recently been extensively and thoughtfully refurbished by the current owner. The spacious open plan reception and kitchen area has a varnished oak feature wall with integrated Samsung television, and there is access to a West facing decked balcony through sliding glass double doors. To the centre of the room, is an underlit and mirrored bar area.
The fully fitted kitchen has high-gloss stone worktops, and dark wooden effect cupboards. There is a breakfast bar within the space, and the kitchen offers a mix of Rangemaster and Neff appliances including wine cooler, hob and fridge/freezer. A discreet utility room is positioned between the bar and kitchen area.
The master bedroom has been finished with cream carpets, and coffered ceiling with LED down lighting. To the rear is a glamorous en-suite with mirrored vanity unit, marble encased bath, and large glass shower. Continuing through the en-suite, there is a dressing room with elegant displays and dressing table.
There are a further two guest bedrooms to the front of the property. One of these has been cleverly hidden behind a pocket door from the hallway, which when closed blends into the wall. This guest bedroom has an abundance of wardrobe space, which has the potential to be altered into an en-suite bathroom. A guest bathroom is positioned in between these two spaces offering shower room, mirrored medicine cupboard and freestanding basin.
Whaddon House offers a porterage service and allocated parking. It is within walking distance of Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner station (Piccadilly line), and is minutes away from the Harrods department store
