ETF data provider ETFGI reports a new record high for global active ETF assets with USD38.19 billion at the end of June 2016. The firm writes that record levels of assets were also reached at the end of June for active ETFs/ETPs listed in the United States at USD26.38 billion, Canada with USD4.46 billion, and in Asia Pacific ex Japan with USD1.56 billion.
At the end of June 2016, the Global Active ETF/ETP industry had 272 ETFs/ETPs, with 372 listings, assets of USD38 billion, from 51 providers listed on 17 exchanges in 14 countries, says ETFGI.
“Markets and investors around the world were engulfed in the chaos following what many saw as the unexpected result of the UK’s June 23rd vote. Volatility was up significantly during the month. The S&P 500 index was up just 0.3 per cent. Emerging markets were up 3.94 per cent while developed markets ex-US declined 2.87 per cent. There is still uncertainty in the markets due to questions on when and how Brexit changes will be implemented and the many changes happening in UK political parties," says Deborah Fuhr, managing partner at ETFGI.
In June 2016, active ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of USD724 million. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with USD296 million, followed by mixed asset class ETFs/ETPs with USD247 million, and equity ETFs/ETPs with USD145 million.
YTD through end of June 2016, active ETFs/ETPs have seen net inflows of USD3.01 billion. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows YTD with USD1.88 billion, followed by mixed asset class ETFs/ETPs with USD437 million, and commodity ETFs/ETPs with USD343 million.
PIMCO is the largest active ETF/ETP provider in terms of assets with USD7.65 billion, reflecting 20.0 per cent market share; Source is second with USD5.13 billion and 13.4 per cent market share, followed by First Trust with USD4.80 billion and 12.6 per cent market share.
Just seven out of the 272 active ETFs/ETPs have greater than USD1 billion in assets, and hold a combined total of USD17 billion, or 45.3 per cent, of global active ETF/ETP assets.
