European ETF and ETP assets hit record USD539bn

Assets invested in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and exchange-traded products (ETPs) listed in Europe reached a new record of USD539 billion at the end of July 2016, according to figures released by ETFGI.

The European ETF/ETP industry ended the month with 2,220 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,957 listings, assets of USD539 billion, from 54 providers listed on 25 exchanges in 21 countries, according to ETFGI’s July 2016 global ETF and ETP industry insights report.
 
Record levels of assets were also reached at the end of July for ETFs/ETPs listed globally at USD3.343 trillion, in the US at USD2.367 trillion, in Japan at USD191.82 billion and in Canada which reached USD81.19 billion.
 
“Investor confidence returned during July after the surprising result of June’s Brexit vote. The S&P 500 was up 3.7 per cent in July. Developed markets outside the US gained 5.1 per cent and emerging markets were up 4.8 per cent," says Deborah Fuhr (pictured), managing partner at ETFGI.
 
Net inflows gathered by ETFs/ETPs in July were strong with USD9.40 billion, representing the largest month of asset gathering during 2016 and marking the 22nd consecutive month of net inflows, according to ETFGI’s July 2016 global ETF and ETP industry insights report. 
 
Fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with USD4.80 billion, followed by commodity ETFs/ETPs with USD2.59 billion, and equity ETFs/ETPs with USD2.20 billion.
 
YTD, ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe have gathered net inflows of USD31.73 billion which is below the USD48.17 billion gathered at this point in 2015. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest and a record level of YTD net inflows with USD22.41 billion, followed by commodity ETFs/ETPs which have gathered a record level of YTD net inflows of USD10.13 billion, while equity ETFs/ETPs experienced net outflows YTD with USD2.02 billion.
 
iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in July with USD6.94 billion, followed by SPDR ETFs with USD1.12 billion and ETF Securities with USD1.08 billion net inflows.
 
iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows YTD with USD19,83 billion, followed by ETF Securities with USD4.02 billion and SPDR ETFs with USD2.92 billion net inflows.
 
In July, 15 new ETFs/ETPs were launched by five providers and one ETF/ETP was closed.
