State Street Global Advisors appoints global SPDR COO

State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) has appointed Malcolm Smith to the newly created role of global SPDR chief operating officer.

He will be based in London and report to Rory Tobin, co-head of the global SPDR business.
Smith (pictured), a 30-year industry veteran will be responsible for leading, managing and developing all aspects of the operating infrastructure for the global SPDR ETF business.
Prior to joining State Street Global Advisors, Smith was interim global COO in the global investments and solutions division at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management.
Smith served in previous roles as global COO for M&G Real Estate and European COO of Barclays Global Investors, where he played a leading role in establishing and managing the European iShares business.
Smith spent the early part of his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers as principal and head of the investment management consultancy practice for the investment management sector.
Tobin says: “As our global SPDR ETF business grows and we strengthen our team, we want to ensure that we provide the highest quality investment products and solutions to our clients and partners. Malcolm’s considerable domain knowledge and experience in both asset management and exchange traded funds will be instrumental to developing and strengthening our SPDR ETF business. We are delighted to welcome Malcolm to SPDR and look forward to working with him as we enhance our position as a leader in the global ETF industry.”
