SPDR comments on building an income in a low yield world

RELATED TOPICS

Antoine Lesné (pictured), Head of SPDR ETF Strategy & Research, EMEA, has written a note on building an income portfolio in today’s low yield world.

He writes: “EMD currencies provide a more attractive entry point for long-term investors.  While global institutional flows into EMD have been lacklustre in the past months, ETF investors in Europe invested close to USD1.9 billion in EMD between 1st January and 9 February – around 12 per cent of EMEA-domiciled ETF inflows.

“High yield ETF investors need to do more due diligence around the indices being tracked.  In Euro high-yield, for example, the case of financial subordinated debt has the potential to negatively surprise should bank bail-ins be required.”

In terms of yield sustainability in equities, Lesné writes: “The appearance of  high dividends is not necessarily indicative of actual delivery of yield of dividend yield growth.  Investors need to scrutinise the sustainability of yield.”
