ETF global assets reach new record high

ETF data provider ETFGI has reported that assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed globally reached a new record of USD4.168 trillion at the end of the first half of 2017.

The Global ETF/ETP industry had 6,965 ETFs/ETPs, with 13,125 listings, assets of USD4.168 trillion, from 328 providers listed on 70 exchanges in 56 countries.

“Equity markets have performed well in the first half of 2017: the S&P 500 gained 9.34 per cent, international equity markets outside the US were up 14.27 per cent and emerging markets were up 16.69 per cent. Political risks remain a focus for investors – the ability of the Trump administration to move forward on policy goals and hearings on Capitol Hill, Brexit negotiations, and North Korea is still an area of concern,” says Deborah Fuhr (pictured), managing partner at ETFGI.

ETFs and ETPs listed globally gathered a record amount of USD63.57 billion in net inflows in June and a record level of USD347.70 billion in year to date net inflows. At this point last year there were net inflows of just USD123.55 billion.

Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered a record level of USD41.15 billion in net inflows in June, bringing year to date net inflows to a level of USD242.69 billion, which is, ETFGI says, much greater than the net inflows of USD15.81 billion over the same period last year.

Fixed income ETFs and ETPs have gathered a record level of USD17.17 billion in net inflows in June, growing year to date net inflows to a record level of USD80.96 billion, which is greater than the same period last year which saw net inflows of USD67.98 billion.

Commodity ETFs/ETPs accumulated net inflows of USD1.34 billion in June. Year to date, net inflows are at USD7.29 billion, which is significantly less than the net inflows of USD26.31 billion gathered over the same period last year.

iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in June with USD28.83 billion, followed by Vanguard with USD13.38 billion and SPDR ETFs with USD6.68 billion net inflows.

YTD, iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows with USD140.84 billion which is above the USD137.90 billion gathered in all of 2016, followed by Vanguard with USD82.31 billion and Schwab ETFs with USD13.39 billion net inflows.
