ETFs in Canada reach record high


ETF data provider ETFGI reports that, in January 2018, assets invested in ETFs listed in Canada reached a record high of USD122 billion.

Assets invested in ETFs listed in Canada increased by USD4.94 billion during January with net inflows of USD1.68 billion. Equity ETFs gathered the largest net inflows with USD852 million, followed by active ETFs with USD636 million.
During January 2018 assets invested in ETFs listed in Canada increased by USD4.94 billion, or 4.23 per cent, representing the greatest absolute monthly increase for almost two years. According to ETFGI’s data this monthly increase has only been surpassed once, in March 2016, when assets grew by USD8.05 billion.

January 2018 also marked the fourth consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs listed in Canada, with USD1.68 billion gathered during the month, ETFGI says. The majority of these flows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD1.42 billion in January 2018. Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences ETF (HMMJ CN) on its own accounted for net inflows of USD198 million.
