ETF data provider ETFGI reports that ETFs and ETPs listed in Canada gathered USD2.27 billion in net inflows in March 2018. YTD 2018 net inflows are at USD6.06 billion which is more than the USD4.93 billion in net inflows at this point last year.

March 2018 marked the sixth consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada and assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada increased by 0.89 per cent, or USD1.04 billion, during March, to USD117.97 billion.

The increase of 0.89 per cent, from USD116.93 billion at the end of February 2018 to USD117.97 billion, also represents the highest monthly growth in assets since February 2018, when assets decreased by 4.06 per cent from USD121.87 billion to USD116.93 billion.

ETFGI writes that at the end of March 2018, the Canadian ETF industry had 594 ETFs, with 733 listings, assets of USD117.97 billion, from 28 providers on two exchanges.

The majority of the monthly net new inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD4.07 billion during 2018. The BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) on its own accounted for net inflows of USD783.98 million.

Canadian-listed Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of USD1.05 billion in March, bringing net inflows for 2018 to USD3.65 billion which is more than the USD2.21 billion in net inflows at this point last year. Fixed Income ETFs and ETPs suffered net outflows of USD89.03 million in March, bringing net outflows for 2018 to USD15.03 million which is less than the USD1.58 billion in net inflows at this point last year.

Investors have tended to invest in active and equity ETFs in March 2018 with the BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) and iShares Core S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index ETF (XIC CN) capturing most of the flows, ETFGI says.
