ETFGI reports assets in Japanese ETFs broke through milestone in March

ETF data provider ETFGI reports that assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan broke through the USD300 billion milestone to reach USD308.46 billion at the end of March 2018.

In March 2018, ETFs and ETPs listed in Japan gathered record net inflows of USD15.57 billion, beating the prior record of USD10.44 billion set in March 2017, ETFGI reports.
 
March 2018 also marked the fifth consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan.
 
Assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan grew by USD10.99 billion in March. The increase of 3.70 per cent, from USD297.46 billion at the end of February, also represents the greatest monthly growth in assets since January 2018, which saw a monthly increase of USD18.82 billion.
 
At the end of March 2018, the Japanese ETF industry had 176 ETFs, with 190 listings, assets of USD305.69 billion, from 17 providers on two exchanges. At the end of March 2018, the Japanese ETF/ETP industry had 208 ETFs/ETPs, with 242 listings, assets of USD308.46 billion, from 19 providers on two exchanges.
 
March 2018 marked the fifth consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan.
 
The majority of net new inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD29.89 billion during 2018. The TOPIX Exchange Traded Fund (1306 JP) on its own accounted for net inflows of USD8.18 billion.
 
Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan gathered a record net inflows of USD14.57 billion during March, bringing net inflows for 2018 to USD27.08 billion, which is more than the USD26.15 billion in net inflows at this point last year. Leveraged ETFs and ETPs gathered net inflows of USD1.20 billion during March, growing net inflows for 2018 to USD3.81 billion, which is more than the USD307.06 million in net inflows at this point last year.
 
ETFGI reports that investors have tended to invest in core and market cap ETFs in March 2018, with the TOPIX Exchange Traded Fund (1306 JP) and Daiwa ETF TOPIX (1305 JP) capturing most of the flows.
