Harbottle & Lewis appoints wealth management partner

Harbottle & Lewis has appointed Jonathan Burt as a partner in the firm’s Private Capital practice.

Burt joins from Harcus Sinclair where he was a partner since 2012, having previously worked as a managing director at Barclays Wealth where he was on the management committee of the international tax, trust and insurance businesses.
Before that Burt worked in Baker McKenzie’s Wealth Management department where he became partner in 2004.
Burt has more than 20 years’ experience advising on international private client matters. He specialises in sophisticated complex cross-border tax and succession planning, multi-jurisdictional investment structures and advisory work for trustees, beneficiaries and families with international interests.
Burt has particular experience advising UK resident non-domiciled clients, families based in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and US citizens who live outside America. His core areas of expertise are UK tax, international investment structures such as trusts and compliance with exchange of information programmes.
Burt will join Harbottle & Lewis’ Private Capital team headed by Managing Partner, Glen Atchison.  He will be the fifth partner in the Private Capital team advising business owners, entrepreneurs and international families on their legal issues.
Atchison says: “We are very pleased to welcome Jonathan to the firm. His arrival supports our strategy to build upon our reputation with, and enhance our offering to, ultra-high net worth global families. He brings with him a wealth of industry knowledge and experience, gained both in private practice and in private banking and is highly respected as being at the very top in his field in private client work.”
Burt says: “I am very excited about joining the team at Harbottle & Lewis. Harbottle & Lewis have always acted for wealth creators which make it a great fit for my expertise.  The firm has a deep commitment to advising on legal issues arising from the acquisition, management and investment of private capital. The move offers me the opportunity to expand further my practice with Harbottle & Lewis’s leading Private Capital practice and the other areas of the firm for which it is renowned including technology, media and entertainment.”
