Wealth managers tackle Land’s End to John o’Groats charity cycle challenge

Six cycling enthusiasts, including several who work in the investment sector, are taking on a 1,000 mile cycle challenge from Land’s End to John o’Groats, with the aim of raising over GBP100,000 for Bowel & Cancer Research.

The cyclists whose team name is ‘Bums on Bikes’ will endeavour to complete the challenge, covering on average 83 miles per day, over the course of twelve days from 10 to 21 June 2018. This cycling challenge is not for the faint-hearted as the cycle ride will entail climbing nearly 55,000 ft which is approximately the equivalent of cycling up Mount Everest – twice.
The ‘Bums on Bikes’ team includes seasoned investment specialists Paul Reynolds, Charles Mesquita and Ian Prideaux. Completing the team are Julian Cripps, Managing Director at RPMI Railpen, William Ridsdill Smith, a GP in Woolpit in Suffolk and Doug Tannahill, an Osteopath at CHHP in Harley Street. The majority of the team have first-hand knowledge of bowel cancer and the devastating impact it can have on people’s lives.
The ‘Bums on Bikes’ team has secured strong support from a range of sponsors, including many from the wealth management sector, as part of its aim to raise over GBP100,000 on behalf of the charity. Sponsors include: Fundsmith; Eaton Vance Investment Management; Delancey; Lansdowne Partners; J O Hambro Capital Management Group; Sandaire; Thesis Asset Management; Blue Sky Luxury; and Coller Capital.
Paul Reynolds who is leading the charge on 10 June, is a survivor of bowel cancer. He was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in 2008, but thanks to medical advancements he survived. As part of his recovery he embraced cycling in order to improve his overall fitness and well-being. Simultaneously, he got involved with Bowel & Cancer Research, first as a trustee and now as the Chairman.
Reynolds says: “I am passionate about the need to raise awareness of bowel cancer and other bowel diseases. Bowel Cancer is the second biggest cancer killer effecting one of out of every 18 people.   In addition, other bowel conditions such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s disease cause misery to significant number of people.  Unfortunately however there is a significant lack of funding for research in this area.
“To assist Bowel & Cancer Research to continue funding the best science across the UK into bowel cancer and other bowel diseases, and to mark the 10th anniversary of my diagnosis, I along with my fellow ‘Bums on Bikes’ will undertake the ultimate cycling challenge of completing the Land’s End to John o’Groats route. In doing so, and with the tremendous support from our sponsors, we hope to raise over GBP100,000 – and we’re thrilled to report that to date we have already raised over GBP55,000 of this target – to fund vital research and enable more people, like myself, to survive bowel disease and bowel cancer.”
