State Street Global Advisors, the asset management arm of State Street Corporation (STT), has appointed Matteo Andreetto as senior managing director and head of the SPDR ETF business for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) effective immediately.

Reporting to Rory Tobin, global head of State Street Global Advisors’ SPDR ETF business, Andreetto will be responsible for developing, leading and executing all aspects of SPDR’s ETF business strategy in EMEA. He will lead the ETF sales teams, working with colleagues across product development, marketing, capital markets and infrastructure to deliver ETF products and services that meet client aspirations. Andreetto will be based in London.

Andreetto joins from STOXX, part of Deutsche Börse Group, where most recently he was CEO and Head of Index Services.  Previous roles included senior positions in capital markets distribution leadership at firms including Unicredit, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs.

“The European market place has been a key source of growth for the global SPDR ETF business, with particular investor interest in fixed income, equity sector and smart beta strategies,” says Tobin. “We believe the European ETF market is in the early stages of developing its growth potential, with various secular trends providing a supportive backdrop for continued growth.  These trends include greater focus on value for money in investing, increased requirements for transparency and liquidity in investment products, increased use of fixed income ETFs in portfolio management and a migration to fee based advisory models in wealth management.”

“Building on a proven track record in leading and growing distribution teams in Europe, Matteo brings a number of capabilities we believe are essential for this next era of SPDR in EMEA.  Matteo has focused his whole career around problem-solving to meet clients’ investment needs, has a deep understanding of the capital markets ecosystem, and has a strong ability in delivering the best of a global organisation to clients. We look forward to working with Matteo and leveraging his skillset.”

“Twenty five years into their existence, ETFs have shifted the way investors think about how they invest,” adds Andreetto. “ETFs have become key building blocks when making asset allocation decisions and have enabled advisors to focus on investors outcomes with greater efficiency.  SPDR is the creator of the world’s first ETFs and I look forward to working with clients and colleagues to build on that proud heritage of investment innovation.”

Andreetto holds a Master of Science in Economics and Finance from Bocconi University in Milan and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program (AMP 189)
