Merian Global Investors (formerly Old Mutual Global Investors) has appointed Sarah Bates as independent non-executive chair, and Mark Gregory as independent non-executive director and chair of the audit and risk committee on its board of directors.
They both join with immediate effect.
The appointments follow the formation of the Merian Global Investors business in June 2018, when its management team, together with funds managed by TA Associates, the global growth private equity firm, acquired the ‘single-strategy’ asset management capabilities of Old Mutual Global Investors. The business was renamed Merian Global Investors on 1 October 2018.
Bates and Gregory will work with the wider board, which includes representatives from Merian Global Investors and TA Associates, and the firm’s senior leadership team to help develop its strategy and growth. They will provide guidance, support and challenge to the management team, and oversee the governance and risk framework of the business.
Bates has over 38 years’ experience in the financial services industry, including nearly 20 years of experience in non-executive board positions in publicly-listed companies, investment trusts and pension funds. She recently stepped down from her position on the St James’s Place Plc board, where she was chair since 2014. Aligned with the thinking of Merian Global Investors, Sarah is an avid champion of the benefits of diversity within the investment management industry and is one of the founders of the Diversity Project and chair of the Diversity Project Charity.
The position on the Merian Global Investors board will be Gregory’s second current non-executive director role, alongside Direct Line Insurance Group Plc. With experience across numerous sectors including insurance, savings and retail, Mark’s career spans over 34 years, including eight years as an executive director on the board of Legal & General Group Plc, with the last four years as its chief financial officer.
Richard Buxton, CEO, Merian Global Investors, says: “Merian Global Investors is in the early stages of life as an independent asset management business and I’m thrilled that Sarah Bates and Mark Gregory are joining our board at this pivotal time. I’m a great believer in the power of independent directors to drive positive change and I have every confidence that Sarah and Mark’s considerable experience will be a significant asset to our business as we grow.”
Bates says: “I have watched the development of Merian Global Investors with great interest and I am incredibly excited to join the organisation as chair at this crucial stage in its journey. The management team’s commitment to building a differentiated asset management business is unwavering and I look forward to working with them as we grow a market-leading organisation.”
Gregory adds: “I’m delighted to be joining the board of Merian Global Investors. Having spent many years in the financial services industry, I am thoroughly impressed with the firm’s unique culture and passion to deliver for its clients.”
