Assets invested in actively managed ETFs and ETPs listed globally reached a new high of USD106 billion, following net inflows of USD2.96 billion and market moves during September, according to figures released by ETFGI.

August trends continued, with actively managed ETFs/ETPs in North America attracting net inflows, while actively managed ETFs/ETPs in Europe saw net outflows, according to ETFGI’s September 2018 Global Active ETF and ETP industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service.

“Developed markets were broadly up during September following positive economic data from the US, Japan and Eurozone, despite the US-China trade dispute and on-going political tension in Europe. Developed Markets ex-US gained 0.68 per cent during the month while the S&P 500’s winning streak tapered off, gaining only 0.57 per cent, with mid to small cap US equities closing down. Developing markets downward trend continued, with EM markets down 1.37 per cent and Frontier markets down 0.18 per cent, bringing year to date declines to 8.08 per cent and 7.56 per cent, respectively,” says Deborah Fuhr, managing partner and a founder of ETFGI.

At the end of September 2018, the Global Active ETF/ETP industry had 583 ETFs/ETPs, with 728 listings, assets of USD106 billion, from 122 providers listed on 20 exchanges. Following net inflows of USD2.96 and market moves during the month, assets invested in actively managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally increased by 1.40 per cent, from USD104 billion in August 2018 to USD106 billion.

Actively managed Fixed Income ETFs and ETPs listed globally gathered net inflows of USD1.97 billion in September, growing net inflows for 2018 to USD17.40 billion, greater than the USD13.59 billion in net inflows at this point last year.  Actively managed Equity ETFs/ETPs listed globally gathered net inflows of USD475m in September, bringing net inflows for 2018 to USD6.02 billion, greater than the USD4.67 billion in net inflows at this point last year.

September marked the 44th consecutive month of net inflows into actively managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally. Year-to-date in 2018 actively managed products have seen net inflows of USD27.02 billion, greater than the USD18.81 billion in net inflows at this point last year.

A large proportion of net inflows during September can be attributed to the top 20 actively managed ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD2.49 billion. The PIMCO Enhanced Short Maturity Strategy Fund (MINT US) gathered USD497m, the largest net inflow in September, followed by the Invesco Optimum Yield Diversified Commodity Strategy No K-1 ETF (PDBC US) which gathered USD423 million.
