European ETFs and ETPs gathered net inflows of USD6.42bn in Feb


ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered net inflows of USD6.42 billion at the end of February, bringing year-to-date net inflows to USD21.20 billion. Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry have decreased by 4.0 per cent, from USD1.04 trillion at the end of January, to USD997.48 billion, according to ETFGI’s February 2020 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. 

“At the end of February, the S&P 500 was down 8.2 per cent as coronavirus cases continued to spread and the potential economic impact weighed on investors and the markets. Outside the US, the S&P Developed ex-US BMI declined nearly 9.0 per cent. The S&P Emerging BMI lost 5.1 per cent during the month. Global equities as measured by the S&P Global BMI ended down 8.1 per cent with 49 of 50 included country indices down, while China gained 0.9 per cent.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

At the end of February 2020, the European ETFs/ETPs industry had 2,196 ETFs/ETPs, with 8,456 listings, from 67 providers on 27 exchanges in 23 countries.

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe gathered net inflows of USD1.06 billion in February, bringing net inflows for the year 2020 to USD8.81 billion, lower than the USD11.03 billion in net inflows equity products had attracted at this point in 2019. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe gathered net inflows of USD2.58 billion in February, bringing net inflows for the year to USD7.48 billion, lower than the USD13.27 billion in net inflows fixed income products had attracted at this point in 2019. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported USD2.25 billion in net inflows bringing net inflows to USD4.44 billion for2020, which is greater than the USD896 million in net inflows gathered year to date in 2019.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD7.98 billion at the end of February. The UBS ETF-MSCI Emerging Markets UCITS ETF A – Acc (EMMUSC SW) gathered USD1.03 billion alone.

The top 10 ETPs by net new assets collectively gathered USD2.22 billion at the end of February. The Xtrackers Physical Gold ETC (EUR) (XAD5 GY) gathered USD511 million alone.
