Berenberg recruits three senior portfolio managers for currency overlay


Berenberg’s Wealth and Asset Management division has made three experienced hires for its overlay management group within the bank’s London and Zurich offices. Jürgen Büscher is a currency specialist with more than 25 years of professional experience. He joins Berenberg from QCAM Currency Asset Management, a Swiss firm specialised in currency overlay. Dr Jonathan Roberts also has over 25 years of professional experience in Multi Asset and FX, he joins from UBS Investment Bank. Marcus Fernandes is a currency portfolio manager with more than 15 years of professional experience, having worked at Mesirow Financial and State Street Global Advisors, amongst others.

Within Berenberg’s Wealth and Asset Management division, Overlay Management sits within Investment & Risk Management Solutions and is part of the investment platform managed by Matthias Born. Berenberg is expected to increase its assets under management in currency overlay by a good 50 per cent to more than EUR11 billion this year. The bank is currently working on refining the investment process, particularly in relation to the integration of big data solutions. The team also recently implemented Germany’s first real external prime broker approach.
Büscher is regarded as one of Europe’s most renowned overlay experts. He was responsible for currency overlay at currency and asset management specialist QCAM from 2015. Previous roles held include Global Head of Private Wealth Management FX, Money Markets & Commodities at Deutsche Bank Switzerland, Head of Treasury Sales, Structured Products and Currency Overlay Management at ABN Amro Deutschland and Head of FX-Trading, Currency Research and Product Development at DG Bank. Jürgen Büscher will join Berenberg’s Zurich office in September.
Roberts moved from UBS to the Berenberg team in London in August. His most recent position at UBS was that of Multi Asset Class Trader. In this function, he built up and managed the multi-award-winning Neo Actively Managed Certificates (AMC) platform. Previous to that he held various executive positions within UBS, including Head of Dynamic FX and Head of Currency Management Advisory Services. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Wales in Bangor, where he also completed his doctorate in that discipline.
Fernandes joined Berenberg in London in March. Prior to joining Berenberg, he was a senior investment manager in the currency teams of Mesirow Financial and State Street Global Advisors. He began his career in 2005 with State Street Global Advisors. As Senior Investment Manager he was responsible for more than 20 billion dollars in currency investments. Marcus Fernandes holds a Master’s degree in physics from London’s Kings College.
