European ETF and ETP assets reached record USD1.28 trillion at the end of 2020

Assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reached a new milestone of USD1.28 trillion at the end of 2020.  

Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry increased by 24.5 per cent in 2020. During December ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of USD27.17 billion, bringing year-to-date net inflows to USD119.93 billion which is less than the USD125.18 billion in net inflows gathered in 2019, according to ETFGI’s December 2020 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, a monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. 

The S&P 500 was up 3.8 per cent for December and finished the year at an all-time high, having added 18.4 per cent the year. Developed ex-US gained 5.5 per cent during December, concluding 2020 up 11.1 per cent. The S&P Emerging BMI gained 6.1 per cent during December, finishing 2020 up 15.5 per cent. The European ETF/ETP industry had 2,308 ETFs/ETPs, with 8,857 listings, assets of USD1.28 trillionn, from 77 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of 2020.

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of USD21.61 billion during December, bringing net inflows for 2020 to USD62.48 billion, higher than the USD51.72 billion in net inflows equity products had in 2019. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe had net inflows of USD5.58 billion during December, taking net inflows for 2020 to USD40.97 billion, lower than the USD61.02 billion in net inflows fixed income products had in 2019. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported USD604 million in net outflows bringing net inflows to USD15.68 billion for 2020, which is much higher than the USD8.69 billion in net inflows gathered in 2019.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD12.53 billion during December. iShares MSCI World Small Cap UCITS ETF (WLDS LN) gathered USD1.17 billion alone.

The top 10 ETPs by net new assets collectively gathered USD396 million during December. WisdomTree Industrial Metals Enhanced – Acc (META LN) gathered USD87.57 million alone.
