Last year saw Texas-headquartered Dimensional Fund Advisors celebrating assets of USD46 billion in ETFs, having only joined the industry in November 2020.
Anthony Caruso, ETF Investment Strategist, agrees that the firm has enjoyed tremendous growth.
Famously, Dimensional converted six tax-managed mutual funds to ETFs last year, bringing in over USD30 billion to its ETF business and affecting the year’s ETF inflow figures for the whole industry.
Assets from conversions and the new launches have put the firm close to being in the top 10 of ETF providers globally. The four fixed income strategies launched last year have brought in over USD1 billion of new assets in only two months of trading, and the core equity market strategies are sitting at over USD3.5 billion.
Caruso says: “We look to build solutions for our clients where there is demand. Conversion is part of the growth, but we’ve had success in partnership with our clients across both our core equity market and fixed income suites.”
The audience for the Dimensional ETFs is financial professionals, advisers and institutions.
“The impetus for launching our ETF business was that we had clients who wanted to access Dimensional’s approach leveraging our 40 years of implementation in an ETF wrapper,” he says. “The ETF rule in 2019 allowed us to launch with the same flexibility that we have in our mutual funds.”
The firm also announced last year a filing for another 10 strategies, offering exposure to a variety of US, developed international, emerging markets, and real estate equities, as well as component solutions that target companies based on known drivers of higher expected returns.
Caruso says: “At Dimensional, we want to provide investment professionals with robust solutions that we believe are second to none and can be accessed across mutual funds, ETFs, and separately managed accounts.”
