Record global assets of USD12.71 trillion in ETFs end Q1: ETFGI

ETF data consultant ETFGI reports that assets invested in the global ETF industry reached a new record of USD12.71 trillion at the end of March.  

The global ETFs industry gathered USD144.94 billion in net inflows in March, bringing year to date net inflows to USD397.61 billion, the firm says.

Assets invested in the global ETFs industry reached a record USD12.71 trillion at the end of Q1 beating the previous record of USD12.25 trillion at the end of February 2024.

Assets have increased 9.2 per cent YTD, going from USD11.63 trillion at end of 2023 to USD12.71 trillion.

YTD net inflows of USD397.61 billion are the highest on record, the second highest YTD net inflows were USD360.72 billion in 2021 and the third highest YTD net inflows of USD305.82 billion in 2022. There have been 58 months of consecutive net inflows.

At the end of March, the Global ETFs industry had 12,127 products, with 24,302 listings, assets of USD12,71 trillion, from 741 providers listed on 80 exchanges in 63 countries.

During March, ETFs gathered net inflows of USD144.94 billion. Equity ETFs reported net inflows of USD94.62 billion during March, bringing YTD net inflows to USD235.75 billion, higher than the USD30.31 billion in net inflows YTD in 2023. Fixed income ETFs gathered net inflows of USD17.51 billion during March, bringing YTD net inflows to USD61.85 billlion, lower than the USD69.83 billion in net inflows YTD in 2023. Commodities products reported net inflows of USD1.15 billion during March, bringing YTD net outflows to USD6.38 billion, lower than the USD2.17 billion in net inflows YTD in 2023. 

Active ETFs attracted net inflows of USD25.31 billion during the month, gathering YTD net inflows of USD71.53 billion, higher than the USD37.00 billion in net inflows YTD in 2023.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered USD71.10 billion during March. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY US) gathered USD14.07 billion, the largest individual net inflow.

The top 10 ETPs by net new assets collectively gathered USD2.60 billion over March. WisdomTree Physical Silver – Acc (PHAG LN) gathered USD832.90 million, the largest individual net inflow.

Investors have tended to invest in Equity ETFs/ETPs during March, ETFGI says.
