Global digital assets: October ETF and ETP review

Joshua de Vos, Research Lead, CoinDesk, writes that digital-asset investment products extended their upward trajectory in October, attracting USD7.6 billion in net inflows, according to TrackInsight data.

Total assets under management (AUM) rose to USD225 billion, supported by steady average daily volumes (ADV) of USD1.09 billion.

Despite a volatile trading backdrop, investor allocations remained risk-on, signalling deepening confidence in listed digital-asset vehicles. The introduction of staking-enabled products broadened market participation and catalysed the industry’s shift toward yield-generating exposures.

Index performance

The CoinDesk 5 Index (CD5), which tracks the five largest digital assets by market cap and liquidity, declined 5.34 per cent, while the broader CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20) fell 9.55 per cent.

Bitcoin, tracked by CoinDesk’s Bitcoin Price Index (XBX), ended the month 3.94 per cent lower.

The drawdown followed the 10 October liquidation cascade, which triggered widespread deleveraging across spot and derivatives markets, leading to intraday declines of 47 per cent on average across altcoins, according to CoinDesk Data.

Despite the correction, ETF and ETP flows stayed positive, illustrating the growing resilience of institutional crypto allocations.

Asset flows

Bitcoin products absorbed USD4.86 billion in net inflows, lifting total bitcoin AUM to USD174.8 billion. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) dominated with USD4.27 billion, representing over 50 per cent of bitcoin digital-asset AUM, and 39 per cent of all global products.

Ether-linked ETPs attracted USD1.47 billion, bringing category AUM to USD34.8 billion. The iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) added USD874 million, reinforcing its position as the largest Ether vehicle globally.

Solana products drew USD546 million following the debut of the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) and Grayscale Solana Trust (GSOL), the first US-listed ETPs to integrate on-chain staking rewards, an industry first.

Multi-asset saw negative net flows of USD52 million, taking category AUM to USD2.6 billion, with the Grayscale CoinDesk Crypto 5 ETF, contributing over 23 per cent of category AUM.

Flows by geography

Americas: USD 7.21billion of inflows, maintaining close to 95 per cent of global market share. The United States contributed USD 7.35billion of net flows, with AUM of USD191.7 billion, while Canada saw USD147 million in outflows.

Europe: USD 440 million of net inflows, led by allocations to Switzerland (+ USD282 million), Jersey (+ USD395 million) and Germany (+ USD72 million). Sweden led regional outflows of USD133 million. European AUM rose to USD24 billion in total.

APAC: USD4 million of net outflows, driven by Hong Kong and Australia. Regional AUM stood at USD1.8 billion.

Flows by currency

USD-denominated products recorded USD7.62 billion of inflows, representing 96.8 per cent of global volumes.

CAD (+ USD67.9 million) and AUD (+ USD24.6 million) added incremental growth.

EUR (– USD109 million) and SEK (+ USD42 million) flows were mixed as legacy European products continued to see selective redemptions.

Outlook

October demonstrated that inflows into digital-asset ETPs are increasingly decoupled from short-term price action. While spot markets corrected sharply mid-month, allocations into regulated funds remained stable, underlining the growing role of institutional portfolios in driving capital formation.

With more than 150 crypto ETP filings still pending and US regulatory activity expected to resume in November, the final quarter could see further product diversification — particularly in staking and yield-based structures.
