Assets in global ETFs reached a record USD13.4 trillion in Q3 2024 while quarterly flows also hit an all-time high of USD390 billion, says Morningstar in its latest Global ETF Flows report.

Year-to-date flows into global ETFs stand at USD947 billion. With a quarter remaining, funds are on track to eclipse USD1 trillion in flows, assuming no market disruptions. Flows in Q3 2024 were USD392 billion, surpassing the previous record of USD333 billion in Q3 2021.
Equity (60 per cent) and fixed income (33 per cent) dominated the share of flows, with alternatives a distant third with 3 per cent, or USD34 billion. For the year-to-date, equity and fixed income have captured 96 per cent of flows, or USD894 billion.
Fixed income funds recorded quarterly flows of USD127 billion, marking a new high since they collected USD112 billion in Q2 2020 at the height of the Covid market crash. Actively managed fixed income funds gathered a record USD36 billion in Q3 2024.
The United States dominates global ETF assets and flows on an absolute basis, but ex-US ETFs grew 9.0 per cent organically for the year-to-date, and US ETFs have grown 8.4 per cent.
Actively managed strategies captured 24 per cent of ETF flows in 2024 through September and grew organically at 33 per cent, while passive ETFs grew at a 7 per cent organic rate. Actively managed ETF assets grew to a record USD973 billion after starting the year with USD683 billion.
