etf express beverly chandler captioned.jpgHaving your cake and eating it in financial terms lies at the heart of any investment product. This week we spoke with David Miller from Strategy Shares on his new ETF which comprises a portfolio of investment grade corporate bonds, hedged to the price of gold.

Miller says that he has created: “A portfolio of investment grade corporate bonds but hedged to the price of gold which should maintain that value of your purchasing power and get the yield and that is what makes this fund quite unique… you are having your cake and eating it.”

The investment climate is changing, and to give us a bit of perspective, we have a detailed piece from Invesco, with Nick Kalivas walking us through the ups and downs of his volatility range of ETFs over the last 10 years. Judging by the past performance of his low volatility ETF, SPLV, “an interesting conclusion one might draw is that we are now facing a period of volatility,” Kalivas says.
More warnings in the light of changing investment styles come from ProShares’ Simeon Hyman who urges investors not to forget the factor ‘momentum’ while chasing after value. “Momentum has proven to be a powerful evergreen approach to driving performance,” he says. Read about the ProShares launch of its Nasdaq-100 Dorsey Wright Momentum ETF (QQQA), which is the first ETF to apply Dorsey Wright’s proprietary Relative Strength signal to the Nasdaq 10.

We had a quick visit to Kansas this week as well, back with US wealth manager 6 Meridian, whose CIO Andrew Mies talked us through the launch of their first brand new ETF. The new product is designed to fill a gap in the range, an actively managed strategy to help investors capture exposure to those companies exhibiting strong growth characteristics. M es also comments that come tax return time, his clients were very impressed by how much easier that process had become once they were using ETFs rather than SMAs.

Finally, CoinShares, a ‘right place right time’ company, reported on its record-breaking growth in the most popular sector at the moment –cryptocurrencies. Let me just pick one figure from an array of astonishing figures – the firm’s total comprehensive income for the first quarter 2021 saw a year-on-year improvement of GBP24.7 million or 334 per cent.
