etf express beverly chandler captioned.jpgOur big feature this week details the rise of the semi-transparent ETF in the US, and the latest ambition from semi-transparent issuers, Blue Tractor, who have applied for exemptive relief on long/short trading. Having this up and running brings the ETF sector even closer to the active sector, as Blue Tractor’s co-founder Simon Goulet explains in the piece. The other big development outlined in the piece is that semi-transparent structures might be due to arrive in Europe. Read our piece for comment from Dillon Eustace’s Brian Higgins and PwC’s head of ETFs, Marie Coady.

Other news this week comes in an interview with Indxx’s Rahul Sen Sharma on their latest project with Mirae Asset Management, a top 10 US tech stocks index. “It’s a unique and novel idea,” he says, “but we see a lot of novel ideas and you never know whether something will succeed or not but we saw the Amazons, Facebooks and Netflixes but also Nvidia, Tesla and PayPal that are powering the fifth wave of industrial technological innovation in the world…In terms of human history these are the companies that are most powerful today, whereas before it was energy and before that steel.”

Infrastructure and utilities lie at the heart of everything and we also stopped by for a chat with Reaves who specialises in exactly those areas. Reaves’ John Bartlett explains that there’s an ESG story in every utility company. “If you want to have an impact on the environment, a dollar invested with a utility company is a dollar invested in energy efficiency and the money goes right into the community as utilities are the biggest employers of veterans and the workforce is a reflection of its community,” he says.

Global X has published its latest look at upcoming big themes and non-fungible tokens, robotics and artificial intelligence dominate, while over at Rize ETFs, we talk to co-founder Stuart Forbes on their latest launch focused on sustainable food. The sector is enjoying pick up from a rotation to value as well as its underlying message, Forbes says.
